That’s in large part because, as a child, the Hughes family moved to the Chicago suburb of Northbrook, Illinois; he met his wife at Glenbrook High School. His teen years in Northbrook shaped his personal life and his professional writing, largely because of what a diverse group of people existed there.

After conversing with a Santa Claus impersonator and watching a local choir perform in a church, he comes across Marley. The two of them talk, and he learns that Marley is in fact a very nice man and the rumors about him are not true. He tells Kevin he is watching the choir because his granddaughter is in it, and he never gets to see her because he and his son have not spoken in years after a big argument they had. The new Home Alone is directed by Dan Mazer and the cast of characters includes Archie Yates in the role of Max, Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney.

A popular fan theory is that Home Alone's Kevin grew up to be Jigsaw from the Saw movies, and while nothing in either franchise actually supports this, in hindsight Kevin really does seem to enjoy inflicting pain. Kate shouldn't have been so focused on finding a flight back to Chicago on Christmas Eve, but instead tried to get someone local to check in on Kevin.

Hughes suggested to Columbus that they cast Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, because of his experience while shooting Uncle Buck. Columbus met with 200 other actors for the part, as he felt it was his "directorial responsibility". At the time of filming, the Abendshien family lived in the Winnetka house. They’d met the film’s location manager when they lived in Evanston.
